The Healthcare and Culture in China Study Abroad Program is a student favorite at WSU year after year. The program teaches students a unique mix of Chinese culture and traditional eastern medicine through tours and hands-on clinical experience. While on the Healthcare and Culture in China program, you’ll experience the historic Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square.

Academics
For fully participating in the Healthcare and Culture in China Study Abroad Program, you will receive up to 4 credit hours your Health Professions discipline. The courses offered include Radiologic Sciences, Dental Hygiene, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Health Administrative Services, and Health Sciences. To earn full credit, you will need to attend four 2-hour workshop sessions before the trip, keep a daily journal of your experiences, participate in a post-trip discussion group, and compose an experiential paper based on pertinent experiences on the program.
Faculty
Dr. Yas Simonian, Dean of the Dumke College of Health Professions, Dr. Robert Walker, Chair of the Department of Radiologic Sciences, Stephanie Bossenberger, Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene, and Kathy Culliton, from the Nursing Program will be the instructors for this study abroad program. Each of the faculty have traveled to China extensively and are experts in their fields.
Itinerary
(Subject to Change)
- Days 1-5, Beijing: Including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen square, Chinese acrobatic show, etc.
- Days 6-8, Xian: Including Terra Cotta Warriors, underground palace, etc.
- Days 9-13, Jiamusi: Including visits with a college of health professions, hospital and clinic visits, Chinese medicine& Accupuncture clinics, etc.
- Days 14-18, Shanghai: Including Shanghai Medical Worker College, Yu Garden, knock off market, etc.
Application Requirements
All participants must be at least 18 years of age. This program is open to six students from the Nursing Program, six students from the Radiologic Sciences program, four students from the Dental Hygiene Program, two students from the Clinical Laboratory Sciences program, and one student from elsewhere in the College of Health Professions.
You will apply by submitting an application to the faculty member that represents your course of study. The application will include a short essay explaining your interest in the study abroad program.
This program does include some physical demands, including walking, hiking, and extremely high altitudes. People in reasonably good health should have little concern. All participants must have a valid passport and must provide proof of that passport to the Study Abroad Office at least 90 days prior to the departure date.
Cost
The tentative cost includes WSU credit, international airfare, room and board, excursions, local and in-country transportation, a Visa for entering China, and faculty. It does not include your passport, incidentals, any unscheduled travel, and excess baggage cost.
Payment Schedule
- $240 non-refundable deposit due January 16, 2014
- Remaining balance due no later than February 23, 2014

Fine Print
If the trip is cancelled, all participants will be refunded in full. Any refunds for withdrawal from the program will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees, and according to Continuing Education Policy. Once the group leaves, all costs are non-refundable in their entirety. Dates and prices may change. It is the responsibility of each participant to be aware of any changes by staying in contact with Study Abroad and the program director.
