Beijing, and Xi’an are two of the most famous and historical cities in all of China. Both of these destinations have wonderful cultural sights and sounds to experience from ancient locales such as the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Terracotta Warriors to more the more modern bustling cities. By participating in WSU’s Chinese Language Study Abroad Program to China, you’ll experience all of this, plus you’ll have the opportunity to study Chinese by immersion at a Chinese College!

For participating in this Anthropology Study Abroad, you will receive up to 6 credit hours from the following choices:
- Chinese 1700 – Conversation and Chinese 1015 – Study Abroad Culture
- Chinese HU 2851 – Study Abroad and Chinese HU 2852 – Language
- Chinese 3550 – Culture Studies and Chinese 3850 – Study Abroad

The Faculty
| Melissa Pittman | Melissa Pittman is a native Chinese who has been educated on three continents: Asia, America, and Europe. She holds a Masters of Arts from the University of Leeds in England and has taught Chinese for over 20 years. Melissa teaches a variety of courses at WSU including first, second, and third-year Chinese language, culture, calligraphy and art. She’s traveled to Taiwan and China extensively to study and research in addition to being involved in various study abroad programs there. |
The Itinerary
May 6 – Depart SLC
May 7 – Arrive in Beijing
May 8 – 9 – guided cultural tours of Beijing.
May 10 – Fly to Xi’an for two days of cultural tours
May 11 – Return to Beijing
May 12 – Train to Jiamusi, Hei Long Jiang
May 13 – June 2 – Study Chinese language, culture, and history at Hei Long Jiang LinYe College of Health Professions
June 3 – Train to Beijing
June 5 – Depart for SLC
The Details
The tentative cost of the program will include:
- International airfare
- Entry Visa
- Hotels in Beijing and Xi’an
- Housing with host families in Jiamusi
- Most meals
- Excursions
- All domestic air and ground transportation
- Faculty
The cost does not include your passport, incidentals, any unscheduled travel, and excess baggage cost.
All participants must be at least 16 years old. This program is open to all WSU students and members of the community; however preference will be given to WSU students, especially those in the Anthropology program. People in reasonably good health should have little concern for any physical demands. All participants must have a valid passport and must provide proof of that passport to the Study Abroad Office at least 90 days prior to the departure date.

The Fine Print
If the trip is cancelled, all participants will be refunded in full. Any refunds for withdrawal from the program will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees, and according to Continuing Education Policy. Once the group leaves, all costs are non-refundable in their entirety. Dates and prices may change. It is the responsibility of each participant to be aware of any changes by staying in contact with Study Abroad and the program director.
