While traveling on the 2013 WSU Study Abroad Program to Guatemala, you’ll have the great opportunity to experience Mayan culture first-hand as you attend lectures, teach Mayan women business and micro financing concepts, and participate in excursions to fantastic destinations. You’ll visit culturally and ecologically rich sites such as museums, archaeological sites, and nature reserves around Lake Atitlan and Rio Dulce. Academics

For participating in this Spanish Study Abroad, you will receive credit in two of the following courses:

  • WS 4830/SPAN 3850 – Culture of Guatemalan Women*
  • SPAN 3720 – Spanish for Microfinancing*
  • SPAN 3000 – Proficiency Development**
  • SPAN 2851 – Study Abroad**

*Prerequisite of SPAN 3060 or signature from instructor.
**Prerequisite of SPAN 2020 or signature from instructor.

Faculty

Dr. Alicia Giralt Dr. Giralt has taught culture and civilization courses at WSU since 1999. She has led study abroad programs since 2000 with high ratings from her students. This will be the fifth year of her micro financing program.
Dolores Jasmer, M.A. Jasmer has been an adjunct faculty member since 2000. This will be the fifth year she has partnered with Dr. Giralt in this humanitarian effort.

 

Itinerary

Before Program Classes at WSU (8-10 a.m.)
April 27 Depart SLC for Guatemala
April 28 – May 16 Classes and Humanitarian work in San Pedro La Laguna.
May 17 – 20 Excursion to archaeological sites and nature reserve in Rio Dulce
May 21 Return to SLC

 

Details

The tentative cost of $1,968.78 to $2,121.53 (depending on number of students) will include:

  • Housing
  • Most Meals
  • Excursions
  • All domestic Transportations
  • Faculty

The cost does not include your passport, a Visa, if required, international airfare, incidentals, any unscheduled travel, and excess baggage cost.

This program is open to all WSU students and members of the community age 18 and older; however preference will be given to WSU students. All participants should have at least four semesters of Spanish (or equivalent). People in reasonably good health should have little concern for any physical demands. All participants must have a valid passport and must provide proof of that passport to the Study Abroad Office at least 90 days prior to the departure date.

 

Payment Schedule

$500 non-refundable deposit due December 1, 2013.
$250 payment due January 7, 2014.
$250 payment due February 1, 2014.
$250 payment due March 1, 2014.
Remainder due no later than April 1, 2014.

The Fine Print

If the trip is cancelled, all participants will be refunded in full. Any refunds for withdrawal from the program will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees, and according to Continuing Education Policy. Once the group leaves, all costs are non-refundable in their entirety. Dates and prices may change. It is the responsibility of each participant to be aware of any changes by staying in contact with Study Abroad and the program director.
