Cake Decorating III--Fondant and Gum Paste

Expand your cake decorating skills as you learn how to handle, store, paint, tint and create decorations with fondant and gum paste. You are responsible for purchasing your own supplies (see below).


Students don't have to buy everything to participate. It will just allow you to go along with the instructor as she demonstrates. The Wilton Student Decorating Kits are recommended because it can be cheaper than buying everything individually. They are available in craft and retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Joanns. They are also available online on multiple sites.

Supplies to bring from home:

  • Disposable cloth or paper towels
  • Pencil or pen and paper
  • Cutting tool or small knife
  • Plastic wrap
  • Parchment paper
  • Toothpicks
  • 2 foam cups
  • 2 plastic cups
  • Solid vegetable shortening (2 tablespoons)
  • Small bottle of water (squeeze bottle recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon EACH of cornstarch and confectioners sugar in a small container
  • Small container for gum glue adhesive (made in class)
  • 2 to 3 quart size plastic bags for cleanup
  • 8 pieces of uncooked spaghetti or toothpicks to build flower bases
  • Plastic ruler
  • Rolling pin or large fondant roller
  • Container for transporting and storing finished flowers and bows

  • Straight scallop cutter
  • 2 piece Mum cutter set
  • Calla Lily cutter
  • Calla Lily former
  • 5 piece rose cutter set
  • Modeling stick, ball tool and veining tool
  • 3 piece round fondant cutters
  • Dust-N-Store dusting pouch
  • Decorator brush
  • Thick and thin fondant shaping foam
  • 3 small flower forming cups
  • 9 in. fondant roller with pink and purple guide rings

Wilton products not included in the Student Kit:

  • Roll-N-Cut mat (optional)
  • 1 package White Decorator Preferred Fondant (24 oz)
  • 1 package Ready-To-Use Gum Paste (16 oz)
  • 2 8-inch cake circles
  • Tapered spatula
  • Icing color (green for flower bases)
