Cake Decorating I -- Building Butter Cream Skills


Learn the delicious and beautiful art of cake decorating. Build your buttercream skills as you learn to make icing and decorations including stars, rosettes, wavy lines, loops and swirls. In addition, learn how to ice and fill cupcakes. Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies.


Students are required to bring the following supplies:

  • Table cover
  • Apron (optional)
  • Disposable cloth or paper towels
  • Parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Toothpicks
  • Small bottle of water (squeeze bottle recommended)
  • Several plastic cups or bowls for mixing icing
  • Buttercream icing - bring at least 3 to 5 cups for the first class
  • Powdered Sugar to adjust icing consistency
  • At least 3 gel icing colors - gel-based colors are recommended because they are more concentrated and will not affect the consistency of your icing
  • Cake turntable is recommended - it makes learning to cover and decorate the cakes easier
  • Decorator Products: (Included in the Wilton How to Decorate Cakes and Dessert Kit)

  • 9-inch angled spatula
  • 3 Standard couplers
  • 1 Decorating brush
  • Twelve 12-inch disposable decorating bags
  • Wilton Decorating tips: Round 2A, 3, 5, 12. Star 1M, 16, 21, 32. Drop Flower 2D. Specialty Cake Icer Tip 789
  • The Wilton kit can be found online on Amazon, Wal-Mart, Wilton.com, or at some local craft stores. Students are welcome to bring other sets or kits they may have as well as buy ready-made buttercream (decorator) icing. Sam's Club sells icing in bulk.

    Students will be encouraged to make or purchase a small cake or cupcakes to cover and decorate after completing the first lesson.
