Avalanche Level 1

CEPR5914 Non-credit course 25
Description:
This American Avalanche Association-accredited certification course is intended for individuals wishing to pursue travel in and around avalanche terrain. This specific backcountry course is designed for skiing and snowboarding (touring skis/splitboard required), but the concepts can be used across winter travel disciplines such as snowshoeing and mountaineering. Lecture materials will be presented in the Tuesday night meeting on campus, while field instruction will take place at local backcountry mountainous areas through practical skills sessions over the weekend. Emphasis will be placed on development of skills and knowledge to select appropriate terrain to avoid avalanches. Ski/Splitboard Touring gear can be rented locally through the WSU Outdoor Program and other local rental shops. Some experience with ski touring equipment is preferred, but no experience is necessary.
